Dental sealants are special coatings made from plastic which will be put on the surface of teeth in the back of the mouth (premolars and molars) which are used for chewing. The purpose of these sealants is to prevent decay.
Benefits of Sealants
The surfaces of both the molars and premolars are comprised of grooves called fissures which are susceptible to deterioration. Fissures tend to be deep, and are thus hard to clean using standard oral techniques. They are often more narrow than toothbrush bristles, which means that plaque can easily collect in this region, and the acid which is emitted from the bacteria within the plaque will attack the enamel. This is how cavities are formed, and while fluoride can protect the surface of the teeth from decay, dental sealants offer increased protection to the grooved area by offering a smooth surface which covers the fissure.
Sealants | FAQ
How long will my sealant last?
Dental sealants have been used for decades and have proven to be very durable. Once a dental sealant is applied, it can last for many years. If a replacement is needed, a new sealant can be applied to the tooth.
Is it necessary to continue using fluoride once I have a sealant?
Absolutely. Patients should not discontinue using fluoride just because they have a sealant. The reason for this is because the sealant will only protect the surface area of the tooth they’re applied to. In contrast, fluoride protects all the teeth from cavities and deterioration.
How much do sealants cost?
The prices for dental sealants vary but often come less than the cost of filling a tooth. If you are worried about the cost, you will be happy to know that most dental insurance plans do cover sealant procedures.
About the Procedure
The initial sealant will typically be placed on top of the fissure for the first permanent molar, after the tooth’s chewing surface has erupted. This tooth will grow behind the baby teeth, and if the surface of the tooth is sealed it will be protected.Read More
