Treatment of Periodontal Disease

The purpose of treatment of Periodontal Disease is to control infection caused by bacteria. It is important that you have your teeth professionally cleaned from plaque and tartar every six months. In cases of advanced gum disease, it should be done every three months. Several treatment options of Periodontal Disease should be considered. One of them is Scaling and Root Planing, which allows for the removel of tartar and calculus under the gum line, smoothening the root surfaces to encourage gum tissue to reattach to the tooth.
Another is Curettage – the removal of tissue that lines the periodontal pocket in order to allow gum tissue to heal. In some cases Gingivectomy, surgical removal of periodontal pockets, needs to be done. Deep pockets may be reduced by local delivery of chemical agents directly around the teeth. This treatment usually involves application of Actisite (antibiotic) or Periochip (antiseptic).
In advanced cases, Flap Surgery allows the dentist the open access to diseased tissues and plaque and tartar embedded under the gums. Bone Surgery may be performed in tandem with flap surgery. It will help to reshape or partially remove the bone around a tooth. Several regeneration procedures can be performed during the bone surgery as well. Treatment of Periodontal Disease is critical to keep your teeth for the rest of your life, as well as your Real Smile.
