Prevention of Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease begins at an early age, as plaque begins accumulating. You can prevent this from happening by brushing, flossing and visiting your dental office regularly. You should be aware of early signs of Periodontal Disease. Bad breath and taste, along with the gum bleeding while brushing or flossing, are among the earliest symptoms.
Avoiding smoking, chewing tobacco, clenching or grinding your teeth, and eating foods high in sugars or starch, may help you to prevent the development of Periodontal Disease. Some medication and medical conditions can affect your oral health. Several drugs, such as oral contraceptives, anti-depressants, steroids, can cause dry mouth. Food particles and bacteria attach more easily and for longer, leaving you susceptible to tartar and decay. Pregnancy, diabetes and leukemia may also make you susceptible to gum disease.
A proper dental hygiene program and an awareness of the early symptoms are your best defense against gum disease in order to preserve your Real Smile.
